Welcome to Woodlawn

A diverse urban community

Woodlawn is on the South Side of Chicago. It is one of Chicago’s 77 community areas and is next to Lake Michigan. It has an urban feel, but it’s surprisingly green for a city neighborhood.

Woodlawn is home to a portion of the University of Chicago’s campus, contributing to the area’s youthful feel. It also contains several parks, one of which (called the Midway Plaisance) was home to the 1893 Chicago’s World Fair. Today, it’s a green area open to the public.

The median home price in Woodlawn is about $200K. Most homes in this area are multi-family townhomes or condos. While many retain that traditional Chicago brick appearance, some are more modern and have been renovated.

People & Lifestyle

Woodlawn is a diverse urban community that’s on the rise. New shops and restaurants add to this area’s urban energy, while its beautiful parks maintain a sense of suburban charm. Renovation projects also give this area a sense of upward mobility.

Woodlawn is best for young professionals since it’s close to the city’s busier areas and is comparatively affordable. The youthful presence in this community is contributing to its rising beauty and promise.

Dining, Shopping, & Entertainment

Woodlawn is full of opportunities to learn about its exciting history. So much of the fun to be had here is driven by the community.

One of Woodlawn’s most important historical sites is the Grand Ballroom. Known as the “Home of the Real Groove Masters,” the ballroom is a venue for musical artists as well as events. Woodlawn is also home to one of the largest science museums in the country! Open since 1933, The Museum of Science and Industry provides interactive exhibits to teach people about science.

For an indie coffee shop scene, head to Robust Coffee Lounge. Build your own breakfast sandwich while you sip on a locally sourced coffee brew. For a taste of history, check out Daley’s Restaurant. It’s Chicago’s oldest restaurant and is known for its delicious soul food.

Things to Do

Living in Woodlawn means taking advantage of all the green space! Whether you’re attending an event or strolling with friends, it’s a great place to feel like you’re escaping the city (without actually leaving the city).

Every Saint Patrick’s Day, Woodlawn hosts the Get Lucky 7k and 12k races. Dress in green as you run your chosen course. For the largest house music festival around, look no further than the Chosen Few Picnic & Festival. Enjoy food in the park while you listen to the hottest DJs spin house music. Another major event is the African Festival of the Arts. Black artists can promote and sell their work at this huge, successful outdoor festival.

Feel like taking to the water? You can do that, too! The Jackson Park Yacht Club encourages the community to take advantage of various water activities, including rowing and sailing.
